[Notebook] Troubleshooting - Overheating (Fan) issue of ASUS laptop

The fans in the computer helps circulate air to maintain a stable and safe temperature of the internal system. The fan speed will be changed with the CPU/GPU temperature. The CPU/GPU temperature will be rise, when running huge and intensive programs, such as heavy loading games, video editing, transcoding, and big data operating. Then thermal fan will speed up and let more cold air pass through the thermal module to achieve the purpose of cooling. At this time, you may hear thermal fan spins loudly, especially in a quiet environment.
Your computer may overheat because of insufficient air flow due to dust, hair, or debris blocking the air vents. If you experience the issues of the fan is not working, the fan speed is always fast, or the fan noise is obvious loudly, please refer to the troubleshooting in this article.
Note: If the internal system temperature is not higher than the criteria of the fan starts, the fan will not be running.

You might experience the following issues when the laptop overheats:

  • Certain applications occupy the CPU / Memory resource
  • Dust buildup on the fans
  • Unacceptable operating environment
  • The fans wear and tear in use over time

Please go to the corresponding instruction based on the current Windows operating system on your computer:

  • Windows 11
  • Windows 10

Windows 11 operating system

Update and confirm BIOS / Windows packages / drivers with the latest version on your laptop

Updating software usually helps the system stability and optimization, so we recommend you check and often update to the latest version in your laptop. Here you can learn more about How to update BIOS:

How to update the BIOS version in Windows system

How to use EZ Flash to update the BIOS version

For executing Windows update and drivers update, here you can learn more about:

If the problem persists after you have updated BIOS/Windows packages/drivers to the date, please continue to the next chapter for troubleshooting.

Choose the Fan mode you need

Fan profile allows users to select the fan speed for different workloads with having a quiet operating environment through a balance between temperature and performance.

Note: For the Fan profile on Gaming laptops (ROG/TUF series), please refer to the Armoury Crate introduction.

Note: For the Fan profile on ProArt StudioBook, please refer to ProArt Creator Hub introduction.

  1. Type and search [MyASUS] in the Windows search bar, then click [Open].
If there is no result searched that means your computer may not install it, and please refer to How to install MyASUS.

Use Task Manager to check if there are certain applications occupy the CPU / Memory resource

The CPU/GPU temperature rises when running intensive programs, such as heavy-loading games, video editing, transcoding, and big data operating. Task Manager is a tool to manage applications and processes in Microsoft Windows system. It allows user to check current processes and provides relevant information about computer performance.

You can use Task Manager to check whether an application is using more of the CPU or Memory resources than expected, here you can learn more about How to use Task Manager to check computer performance and end any malfunctioning processes. If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.

Make sure the vents aren’t blocked

Overheat of laptop usually results from something stuck in the fan and heatsink, such as dust or hair. These oil substances easily absorb and attach dust / hair.

If the vents are blocked, it cannot allow fans to remove the heat to perform at its best.

If the overheat problem is resulted from stuck dust, you can initially look for assistance from ASUS customer & service center.

Please do not clean the interior by using the device with strong air, such as air boost compressor. We have a real case that fan is damaged by strong air wave.

If you need to clean by yourself, we suggest that you use the Air compressor at a distance from the spray. Do not use the air boost compressor in an up-side-down position.

Note: Ensure the laptop is off and remove the adapter if you need to clean by yourself.

Air vent is usually located at two sides of laptop.

[Notebook] Troubleshooting - Overheating (Fan) issue of ASUS laptop | Official Support | ASUS Global (4)

Design of air vent for some models of notebook is hidden style (such as UX series). Air vent is not at two sides of laptop but at pivot part of laptop (shown as red in below image).

Note: Some minor models (such as T100 series) is not suggested to clean by the above instruction because its radiation is lower without fan and air vent and it's radiated by case.

If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.

Recommended environment for proper airflow

Make sure fans on your laptop are able to ventilate properly.

Use ASUS laptop where the ambient temperature is between 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). (Refer to the user guide instructions regarding safety precautions)

Using your device on a hard, flat surface (like a table or desk) rather than a soft surface (like a couch, pillow, bed, or your lap).

Provide a distance of clearance around each vent.

Consider using a laptop cooling pad to help provide better airflow to the bottom vents.

If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.

Run Fan hardware diagnostic via MyASUS

You can inspect whether the hardware device is good by the Hardware Diagnostic via MyASUS. If any error occurs after diagnosing, we recommend that you visit ASUS repair center to replace the hardware device.

Q & A:

Q1: Why is the fan running even if my computer enters sleep mode?

A1: CPU/GPU is still working even if the system is in sleep mode, then the fans spin to achieve the purpose of cooling while the internal system temperature is over the standard. If you would like to turn off the fans, you can let the computer enter hibernate mode. The CPU/GPU doesn’t activate in hibernate mode. Here you can learn more about Three ways to turn computer off - Shut down , Sleep, and Hibernate.

If you use third-party apps that measure the temperature of your notebook computer, it’s important to understand that they don't measure the external case temperature. The case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party apps to diagnose possible hardware issues.

If your problem cannot be solved, please contact ASUS customer & service center for further information.
